Maybe we’re getting old, or maybe the constant white noise of online content has finally driven us crazy, but lately we’ve been finding memes exhaaaausting. From Game of Thrones characters telling us to prepare ourselves, to Jack White’s ugly mug, and Kim K’s oiled posterior, the proliferation of these overused, annoying Internet memes has gotten to be too much. That’s why we’ve put together this list of Internet memes that need to do everyone a favor and just die.
We’re not trying to sound like a bunch of grandpas, we sincerely hope these memes find themselves in a paradise called "Meme Heaven," but we just want a little piece and quiet while we try to check our Facebook. But now, every time we post a link to the new Sufjan Stevens album, some keyboard cowboy has to come along and declare our status “a Spiderman thread.” What does that even mean? We understand that memes are a way for people from different walks of life to understand a concept, or have an inside joke (which is amazing when you think about it) but when does the memeing stop?
Now that we’ve basically turned this intro into one long Rage Comic, it’s probably best that we let you get on with reading this list of the most annoying memes on the Internet. The Morpheus meme started on Reddit (where else?) in 2012 and since then it's been applied to every political faction, sexuality, computer brand, etc. etc. etc. Now that this meme is out of steam, it's time for Morpheus to disappear back into the Matrix.
Doge
Such lame. So painful. Time wasted. The Doge meme popped up in 2013 when a photo of a Shiba Inu decorated with colorful comic sans text began making the Internet rounds. Soon enough, the meme was discovered by Congress and like everything else they touch - they ruined it.
Ermergerhd
We've been ignoring ermahgerd for like, four years now, hoping that it would it would quietly slip out of the cultural consciousness and become a Jeopardy answer in 2020. But no, it keeps popping up in comment sections and Facebook feeds. Please, for the love of Gerd, let it die.
Keep Calm and Carry On
Keep Calm and Carry On was a motivational poster produced by the British Government in 1939 in preparation for WWII. Somehow that poster transferred itself to every fandom known to man. Let's keep calm and stop using this poster.
The Y U No Guy
The Y U No Guy is a rage comic that began around 2009 with "Y U NO TX BAK?!" and it was immediately applied to every topic that anyone could ever think of. This comic might still be funny, but the web ran it into the ground. Y U NO STOP DOING THIS MEME?!
Kim Kardashian Breaks the Internet
Is it possible to boo a meme? Like, can we just boo forever at our computer monitors? Because this Kim Kardashian meme makes us want to scream until our voices go hoarse. When the original photo showed up online in 2014, the Internet didn't break so much as it became a place where you went to check your email and post your own photoshopped Kim K pic. Every time we think this meme is going to die, it comes right back. Surely there's nothing more to do with Kim's butt.
Rickrolling
The first known instance of a rickroll occurred in May 2007 on /v/, 4chan's video game board, where a link to the Rick Astley video was claimed to be a mirror of the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV. And that's where it should have died. But instead, denizens of the Internet continued to be rickrolled any time they tried to watch a trailer or download a Coldplay album until the man himself, Rick Astley, appeared at the 2008 Macy's Day Parade performing his only hit single. Unfortunately, the meme is still going strong.
One Does Not Simply
We don't know who the first person was to make the One Does Not Simply meme, but it's been about 10 million years since The Fellowship of The Ring has been released so they're probably dead. We think it's time to let Boromir and this meme follow suit.
Apparently Kid
Please, stop sending us links to the apparently kid. We laughed the first time we saw it in 2014, but now it's starting to grate on our nerves. Let this kid grow up in peace.
Imma Let You Finish
At the 25th annual MTV Video Music Awards in 2009, Kanye West infamously rushed the stage during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for the Best Female Video award. He uttered the immortal phrase "Imma let you finish..." and the Internet f**king exploded. The meme died down a little bit within the next few months but we still see it in the middle of Facebook arguments, which begs the question, do these people know that Kanye is still doing plenty of other crazy stuff?
